Pura Taman Ayun Temple (a temple of Mengwi Royal family)

Pura Taman Ayun Temple  right in the village of Mengwi , in Mengwi district, Badung regency, about 18 km north of Denpasar. Its location can reach easily by major road Denpasar ↔ Singaraja, through Bedugul. At the time of entry in the City of Mengwi are at a crossroads (  Mengwi palace ) in the City district Mengwi, follow the road eastwards ± 250 meters, this is where the temple is located.

Based Lontar chronicle of Babad Mengwi, now called Pura Taman Ayun Temple , when the recently completed first consecrated in 1634 AD called Pura Taman Ahyun. Ahyun word from the root word “Ahyun” which means desire, so that means ahyun desire. Taman ahyun Temple means a temple in which was set up in a Park (pool with a beautiful flower garden) that can fulfill the desire. Ahyun word changed into the word swing today.

Mangu puri said this expected to turn into Mangui and now Mengwi. Manga or mango may derived from the word Mangu (Java) which means reflection or meditation. Based on this, the Mangu Puri means a good place to conduct Yoga and meditation.

Pura Taman Ayun historical background known based on archaeological data contained in Pura Taman Ayun and data contained in the chronicle of Lontar Mengwi .

1.Archaeological data.

On the left front entrance to the first page (outer Jaba side) Pura Taman Ayun there are two buildings called ” Batu Aya ” and ” Bedugul Krama Carik “, there is a relic of the megalithic tradition of stone  “Menhir” increasingly drawn upon increasingly smaller pyramid-shape terraced. Based on the presence of these relics, its known that the location of Pura taman ayun has been used as a place of ritual activities associated with the ceremony of “Expect Fertility” in agriculture since the development of megalithic tradition around the year 500 BC.

2.Data in the Chronicle Mengwi.

Called, I Gusti Agung Putu pioneering his power, started from a gift of forestlands and the people’s choice of as many as 200 people from a villager Headman of Marga i.e I Gusti Bebalang. Clearing the Forestlands and then I Gusti Agung Putu established palace with the name “Puri Bala Ayu”. Now being Belayu.

He has succeeded in united the region and the Anglurah (the head villager of public figure) in the area around Bala Ayu, then I Gusti Agung Putu move his palace to Bekak with named Puri Kaleran . In addition, he also established a place of worship is located on the northwest Puri Kaleran called “Pura Taman Ganter”, he also conducted the inauguration ceremony of the establishment of the Kingdom “Rajasuya”. With the ceremonial grandeur, the establishment of a kingdom that will stand with the Kingdom’s official “Mangupuri” with I Gusti Agung Putu as the founder and the first king.

Furthermore I Gusti Agung Putu establish a place of worship on the edge of the lake Beratan which is now named Pura Ulundanu Beratan Temple to adore to that Sthana in Hyang Ing Parwata (residing) in Mt Puncak Mangu,. The establishment of the temple was intended as an expression of Angayu Bagia (a sign of gratitude) towards God or the God who that Sthana (located residence) in Gunung Puncak  Mangu . Because the peak is also called Mount Gunung  Mangu Pangelengan, I Gusti Agung Putu accept that grace, so has the magic power (strength), thus successfully establish the Kingdom Mengwi and able to expand his empire.

He has founded the temple at Beratan lake, now called Pura Ulundanu Beratan Temple, after successfully expanding his kingdom, among others by beated someone who has a power magic (immune of weapon) called Ki Pasek Badak, I Gusti Agung Putu also known by the nickname as I Gusti Agung Sakti has moved his Temple Pura Taman Ganter and set in place a more namely in the areas of strategic ‘luan’ (up-stream) of the intersection, called the Great  Pura Taman Ahyun now called Pura Taman Ayun Temple. This temple was completed and consecrated on the day Anggara Kliwon Medangsia, sasih kapat year Saka “Sad Bhuta Yaksa Dewa”. Pura Taman Ayun Temple function:

Worship of God.

As the main deity worshiped in temple is Ista Dewata . Taman Ayun Temple is dedicated of God as Lord Vishnu, who Sthana (reside) at the peak of Mt Mangu, who in Mengwi Chronicle called Bhatara Hyang Danawa or Hyang Ing Parwata , in Lontar Usana Bali, which is one of preserving Dewa Catur Lokapala, especially the Kingdom of Mengwi of its time. As the media cult is ” Meru Pucak Pangelengan ” a Pelinggih (holy place) Meru Tumpang 9 (shrine with 9 roof) located on the east row, on the left of Meru Tumpang 11 (shrine with 11 roof) is Pesimpangan of Bhatara Gunung Agung .

In the northern row of Pelinggih located Prasada there is a building about 4 feet tall and is referred as Candi Cili Gading as Sthana of Dewi Cili Gading . Apparently intend as Candi cili Gading is another name for Dewi Cili or Dewi Sri or Goddess Lakshmi, Shakti (wife) of Lord Vishnu. Dewi Sri as the ruler of agriculture, particularly as the Goddess of Rice or Dewi Nini . Meanwhile, goddess Lakshmi as the Goddess of the earth the ruler god of soil fertility and agricultural crops. Lord Vishnu with Goddess Sri Laksmi his wife that is Ista Dewata of Pura Taman Ayun in his capacity as the heritage of the Kingdom Temple of Mengwi.

Based on these data, at this moment this temple referred as Dang Kahyangan of Pura Taman Ayun.

Worship of Pitara Gods :

Pitara god was the god of the sacred ancestral spirit who also known by other names or Dewa Hyang or God Hyang Pitara. Pitara god worshiped by the compulsory heirs descendants (Prati cemetery) in the form piodalan the same meaning with Piodalan committed to God. The existence of the worship of gods in the Temple Taman Ayun Pitara see and proved by the existence of a row of buildings located on the east, called Paibon. Paibon is Pelinggih (building shrine) of the Main temple of Pura Taman Ayun temple in the capacity as a special shrine, for the royal family of Puri Mengwi palace or as a family Merajan Agung of Mengwi Kings, especially for the ancestors of the founder of the Kingdom of the ancestors of I Gusti Agung Putu Mengwi.

Special veneration for the holy spirit of Ki Pasek Badak , a man said to have magic powers, but with his willingness to surrender his body and soul to the reign of King Mengwi devotion, conducted through a Gedong Tumpang . It also called Gedong Sari this Gedong building located on the east row, i.e row Teben. Ki Pasek Badak not worshiped by the kings of Mengwi and his descendants, but worshiped by Ki Pasek Badak descendants, and descendants of King Mengwi who appointed as a descendant Pineras based Widiwidana or base of the ceremony.
