Ulu Watu Temple (Pura Ulu watu)

Pura Uluwatu Temple is one of the Sad Kahyangan in Bali, located in the Village area Pecatu district of Kuta, Badung regency, about 25 km south of Denpasar.

This temple situated above the cliff jutting into the ocean, as high as approximately 80 meters above sea level. When viewed from the direction of the wind, Uluwatu temple is located, including the southwest of the island of Bali. In the east, there is a pedestal Kekeran Uluwatu (ban forests) belong to the temple,  it’s inhabited by many monkeys and other animals.

Uluwatu is the name of the original name of this temple. The word of Ulu means head or tip while Watu mean Rock/stone. Therefore referred to Uluwatu temple it is built at the end of this rock.

On the right and left side of buildings or Pelinggih (Shrine) “Gedong Ratu Bagus Jurit ” in the Uluwatu temple complex there are two stone sculptures shaped like a boat. If they put together, the shape similar to the sarcophagus, stone coffin of megalithic era. Here too there is archaeological heritage originating from the gate of 16-century. Winged   archaeological relics are extremely rare and seldom found. Winged of the temple gate this time of manufacture can compared with that found in the mosque complex in the village Sendang Duwur, Lamongan, East Java, a period associated with the year of manufacture sengkala moon that founded on these sites. Candra sengkala found in the mosque reading “Gunaning Saliro Tirto Hayu” meaning built in 1483 saka or 1561 AD. Based contents of manuscripts, the development of Uluwatu Temple preceded by Mpu Kuturan in the 11th century.

In Lontar palm ejection, “Dwijendra tatwa” elaborated that Danghyang Nirartha twice visited this Uluwatu;

  1. The first visit when he did Tirha Yatra is a journey to visit the holy places. When I arrived at Uluwatu thrilled his heart, soul murmuring that it was good as a place to worship God. Later when it came time, he chose this place as a place Ngeluwur ‘ release Jiwatman’ to return to the origin (Moksha). Based on these considerations it is decided to build or expand Prahyangan Uluwatu temple building that has gone before. At the time Danghyang Nirartha expand Uluwatu temple building, he established a boarding house as his residence while and then heaven former dormitory it built by local people and named Pura Bukit Gong. Prahyangan development in Uluwatu by Danghyang  Nirartha at 16 century the beginning after appointed as Purohita (pastor adviser of King) Dalem Waturenggong king who ruled from 1460 to 1552.
  2. The second visit will be made to achieve a natural when Danghyang Nirartha Moksa on kliwon Medangsya Tuesday with a witness by a sailor named Ki Pasek Nambangan, he was like lightning, only a very bright light into the sky “Ngeluwur”.

In the Padma Bhuwana Lontar-palm implied that the Uluwatu Temple, located in the southwest or Neriti that works to worship the god Rudra, one of the gods Nawasanga. Lord Rudra is an aspect of the god Shiva as Pameralina or returned to origin. In Lontar-palm Kusuma Dewa outlined that the Uluwatu Temple is one of six temple called the temple of the sky Sad and also “there” or base of the temple to worship the gods Nawasanga, the other three temples are filler or core of the Gods Nawasanga, namely Andakasa Temple, Temple Mount Batur and Mount Agung temple (Besakih).

In Bhuwana lontar papyrus Padma also writes that, the entire Hindu community upholds the Kahyangan Uluwatu Temple. This temple was built as a translation of the holy letters or letter Ma Mang Dasaksara a post in a southwesterly direction to worship the God Rudra.
