Pura Tirtha Empul Temple (Tampak Siring)

Tirta Empul Tampak Siring situated in the village, district Tampak siring, Gianyar regency, some 39 km to the east of the city Denpasar. located in a valley, surrounded by areas of higher and to the west lies the Palace of the President of the Republic of Indonesia in Bali. Tirtha Empul name contained in an inscription which until now kept in the Temple Sakenan, in the village Manukaya, Tampak siring District, about 3 km from Pura Tirtha Empul.dalam this inscription, Tirtha Empul called “Tirtha Hampul” and eventually became “Tirtha Empul”. Tirtha ri air Hampul intention is “a place of self purification that comes from water that appears alone, or the sacred pool of water appeared / gather themselves from the ground”.

Spring water is come from the soil from the Lord’s creation. The spring is then in the year 882 Saka (960 AD) laid back, and turned into a pool of consecrated by King “Indra Jaya Singha Warmadewa” with the name tirtha ri air hampul. This data is contained in the inscription on the temple Sakenan mentioned above.

Transcription of the inscription, among others, line 4 and 5 are: Indra Jaya Singha Warmadewa masahin tirtha ri air hampul. In addition to the above data Efigraph, Tirtha Empul temple was also found that the archaeological heritage as follows:

1. Linga Yoni, located on page II (Jaba-center), on an altar (bebaturan) beneath the facade overlooking the west gate. Linga Yoni is the symbol of the worship of the god Shiva with magic (wife) to invoke fertility goddess Parvati, especially in the agricultural fertility.

3. Tepasana, is building a holy place which was originally just a patio / bebaturan. What you see now is a building that was renovated in 1967 AD. A sign restoration is completed by using the Saka year in the form of a series of relief’s called Candra Sangkala / chronograms consisting of relief: the solar value is 1, its value is 8 elephants, dragons value is 8, the temple briefly its value is 9, when assembled into the year 1889 Saka / 1967 AD. 4. Fountains at Tirtha Empul there now, are grouped into;

(a) Group 5 Shower, located in the east, it seems very Sanctified, because it’s surrounded by a perimeter wall and fence in the middle of the pool there is a pelinggih ‘Bhatara Ganges’ value the sanctity of the shower is the equivalent of holy water from the river Ganges, India. (b) Group of 8 showers, located on the west shower pelinggih “Bhatara Ganges”. Group 8 is partitioned shower into 2 parts comprising: 5 shower (the east) some of which function as ‘pengleburan gering’, which means eliminating various diseases, and 3 showers (west) which of them serves to ‘upadrawaning cor’ associated with the oath . Swimming in the shower 8 is also used for purification rituals themselves for men.

(c) Group of 13 fountains, situated at the south west facing. Pool of 13 showers, among other functions to for pengleburan ‘dasa mala’, ie merging different types of sin and the cleansing and tirtha pengentas tirtha, which is to purify the spiritual for people who have died. It is also used by women for ritual purification by specifically tasked. In religious ceremonies, of this group of 13 showers are showers number 13 (from east) is the sanctification of Ida Bhatara Bayung.

(d) Group 5 shower, facing the west serves to shower ‘Pengleburan Wong Samar’, the holy water that is clean and purify women who have not menstruating at the time.

Mythology of Tirtha Empul Temple

In Lontar Usana Bali narrated that Tirtha Empul created by God Indra when fighting against the king of his castle located in Bedahulu. He is known as a very powerful king, could disappear or appear suddenly called Maya. Therefore, he called Maya Denawa. Because of his power, he became arrogant and claimed he was God. King Maya Denawa mentioned grand vizier has called KalaWong, they forbid people to do the ceremony Yadnya, so often the case of natural disasters, disease outbreaks, agricultural crop failure and ultimately the people life miserable. To overcome these problems the senses with his army of Lord fought against Maya denawa and the duke of Kala Wong. It is said that in a battle that occurred in the area seems Siring Maya denawa forces pressed and eliminate traces. Maya Denawa walk with the foot tilted so supposedly this area then named Tampak siring. In this area also created a pool of water Maya denawa called Yeh Cetik toxic (poisonous water). Therefore much pursue Maya denawa forces, troops from Bhatara Indra thirst they did not know that the pond water contains toxins, and taken by force from Bhatara Indra, so many of them fainting poisoning even death. Knowing the situation immediately plugged Bhatra Indra stick weapon in the form of banners into the ground and end up poking out the water which later was named Tirtha Empul. The water is then drunk to soldiers who died and was so conscious and unconscious life back, thanks to the efficacy and purity of springs Tirtha Empul efficacious as ‘Tirtha Amertha Pangentas Urip’ (holy water which could raise the dead, fainting).

After the incident with his troops Maya denawa increasingly squeezed and fled to the north. Maya denawa disappeared and transformed himself into a bird with a very large area was then named Manukaya (manuk = birds, botanical / aya = large). Deception was soon known by God Indra Maya denawa and eventually fled into hiding behind a rock in the area Pangkung Patas. Another function is to commemorate the victory of the god Indra (dharma) war against Maya denawa (Adharma). Victory of the god Indra (Dharma) commemorated by the celebration of Galungan Day (Balinese Christmas). Linking the two mythological celebrations marking its Galungan also associated with the presence of Empul Tirtha. If this is true then it can be said that Galungan, have been known at the time of the ruling government Indra Jaya singha Warmadewa around  882 Saka or 960 AD.
